Skills...

If you've ever seen Napolean Dynamite, you know what I'm talking about when I say I got "skills". Oh ya...I've got diaper-changing skills, laundry skills, eating skills. And today I can add to that list how-to-extract-a-bead-stuck-up-a-kids-nose skills. (That one I would not recommend learning.) I have also added How-To-Make-Your-Own-Stuff skills to my list (from the inspiration of a friend of mine who has truly mastered this arena). Some of you may ask why I would ever want to make my own cleaning products. Well, the short answer is because it's cheaper than buying them. The long answer is because it's not only cheaper, but it's also healthier (and surprisingly easy). SO....here's the recipes I've used so far.

Dishwasher Detergent (we have found that we have to rinse the dishes extra carefully before putting them in)

All-Purpose Cleaner: 1 part distilled vinegar to 1 part water. Store in squirt bottle.

All-Purpose Scrub: 1 1/2 c. baking soda and 1 c. water- stir and store in jar.

Shower-Cleaner: Equal parts of hydrogen peroxide to water. Spray and let sit for 1 hour; rinse. (for preventing mold growth)

Toilet-Bowl Cleaner- Sprinkle 1/4c. baking soda in toilet, add 1 c. vinegar. Scrub and rinse.

As you can see these are all very basic, no-frills recipes. But they work! Vinegar and baking soda have a lot of uses I never knew of before. Search around on the web and you'll see what I mean!

Enjoy!

  1. Cool. It's fun to save money and still use great products. I use the Duggars recipe for homemade baby wipes and I use the same all purpose cleaner to make my own cleaning wipes, which are safe for the kids to use. I haven't tried homemade soap, but I've been thinking of trying soapnuts for my laundry.
